Kentucky Quarter

Kentucky Quarter

The Kentucky Quarter was the fifth quarter released in 2001, and was the 15th quarter to be released in total. Paying homage to the 15th state to join the Union, the Kentucky quarter features a thoroughbred behind a fence with a mansion in the background. The coin also reads ‘My Old Kentucky Home’.

This coin pays homage to the wealthy racehorse industry in the state, as well was the Kentucky Derby, which is a famous horse race held annually in the state. The mansion in the background on the coin is actually the Bardstown House where the state song, ‘My Old Kentucky Home’, was written by Stephen Foster.

Kentucky is a Commonwealth, like Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Virginia. It is located in the East Central part of the United States, and is considered to be a Southern state. It became the 15th state in 1792, and is known as the Bluegrass State because of the bluegrass that is created by the fertile soil across much of the state. Kentucky is well known for thoroughbred breeding, horse racing, bourbon distilling, manufacturing, tobacco, and bluegrass music.
