Alabama Quarter

Alabama Quarter

The Alabama Quarter was the 22nd quarter to be produced for the 50 State Quarters Program and was released in 2003. The design on the coin represents the state’s focus on the “Spirit of Courage.”

An image of Hellen Keller appears on the reverse of the coin. She is sitting on a chair and reading a Braille book. She was a courageous woman from Alabama who couldn’t see or hear, but earned a college degree, wrote books, and gave many speeches in her life. Her name is written on the coin in print, as well as in Braille lettering.

Alabama is located in the Southern United States and is bordered by Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The state had Native Americans residing in it clear back before 1000 BC, like many of the lands in the area. The area saw trade with the Northeast during the Burial Mound Period, which went on until the 17th century when Europeans made contact with the area. The French established Mobile in 1702, and controlled most of the land for many years. British and Spanish settlements occupied other areas of the state, but was eventually all a part of the United States after the capture of Mobile in 1814.
