State Quarters
The 50 State Quarters Program was launched in 1999 and concluded in 2008. During the course of the program, the United States Mint issued fifty uniquely designed coins featuring the 50 States.
State Quarters have been credited with reinvigorating the hobby of coin collecting by allowing millions of Americans to assemble a diverse and educational collection of coins from their pocket change. The series has also been used as an educational tool to teach children about georgraphy and history.
The first quarter featuring Delaware was released on January 4, 1999. Approximately every ten weeks a new design was released into circulation featuring the states in the order they ratified that Constitution or were admitted into the Union. The final quarter featuring Hawaii was released on November 3, 2008.
During the course of the series more than 34 billion State Quarters were produced by the United States Mint. It has been estimated that 147 million Americans have collected the series, representing at least one person from every household in the United States.
